A lighting controller does two things. The first is obvious: giving enough light to rooms that get little. The second is the one breeders really buy it for: bringing the curves forward, that is, moving the birds' whole biological year ahead.
A canary starts breeding when the day reaches thirteen hours of light. In nature this happens around mid-March. Wait for March and your young birds are still finishing their moult when the season has already begun, and you reach the shows with birds that aren't ready.
Breeders who build the day artificially pair their birds in mid-February, finish the moult in summer and by October have finished birds in the cage, in full feather and rested. You also avoid having nestlings in the nest during the hottest weeks of the year.
You start from the show date and work backwards. Each step depends on the one before, and all of them depend on the hours of light.
Short days, birds at rest. From here the light starts growing again, while outside it's still shrinking towards the solstice.
Small, steady increments, week after week. It's the part nobody can keep up by hand: three months of constant adjustments.
Below twelve and a half hours fertility collapses. At thirteen hours the birds are in condition, about a month ahead of the natural cycle.
The day keeps growing throughout the whole breeding season, as it would approaching the solstice.
It starts about forty days after hatching and lasts six to eight weeks. It's the count that decides everything: this tells you whether the bird will be ready or not.
Gradually reducing the hours triggers the moult when you need it, not when the weather decides. Then it goes down towards the rest period.
Finished birds, in full feather, rested for weeks. It's the only moment when the year's work shows.
